The Listening Area
🌙 Welcome to the Listening Area 🌙
A quiet sanctuary for those who seek something softer.
Here, we honor the magic of sound and silence, music and nature.
There is no amplified light or sound in this space.
Instead, you’ll find acoustic performances, soft conversation, the rustle of trees, and the song of the rivers.
🎶 Acoustic Showcase at the Confluence
Join us on the sandbar at the meeting of the Blue Earth and Le Sueur Rivers
— deep in the woods at Jack McGowen Farm —
for a special acoustic showcase beneath the stars.
10:00 PM on Friday, August 1st
Featuring:
- Joe Scarpellino
- Jon Wayne
- Sunny and Laura of F4MIL7
- Pat Forsyth & Lucas Volz of (Useful Jenkins)
Join us by the crackling sound and dancing light of the fire.
Fire dancers will move like sparks in the night—
and the music will carry you into the dark,
amongst the stars.
🌀 Theory: Listening as an Act of Presence
In most places, sound is something that fills the background—something we tolerate or talk over.
But here, in the Listening Area, we treat listening as something sacred.
Not passive. Not accidental. But deliberate. Engaged. Alive.
We invite you to practice active listening—to music, to nature, to the wind in the trees and the rush of the rivers.
To each other, even in silence.
To the stars, whose stories are told in the stillness.
Listening is not the absence of speaking.
It is the presence of attention—the willingness to receive the world as it is,
without needing to shape it into something else.
Here, we make space for the soft things:
quiet songs, whispered feelings, and the chorus of crickets.
For the realization that sometimes the most powerful thing you can do… is listen.
🎕 Free Camping
Yes—you can camp here.
Pitch your tent within the Listening Area and become part of its rhythm.
Campers are asked to help uphold the peace of the space.
🦥 Acoustic Performances
Musicians will play here without electric amplification.
We treat listening as a powerful, intentional action.
During performances, please speak only in a “12-inch whisper”—just loud enough for someone a foot away to hear.
đź” Stargazing & Astronomy
The Listening Area is also a dark area, protected for stargazing and sky watching.
You are welcome to lie back, look up, and take in the stars.
We provide translucent red tape to cover your flashlight lenses—please use it!
Bright lights hurt eyes, scare wildlife, and break the spell of the night.
Here’s why it matters:
The retina processes light in different wavelengths, and red light has less effect on night vision.
It takes about an hour for the human eye to fully adjust to darkness.
A single burst of white light can reset that process, leaving someone unable to see well in the dark again for quite some time.
Red light helps us stay adapted to the dark—and keeps the night sky vivid for everyone.
🌅 Sunday Silent Time & Free Breakfast
From dusk on Saturday until high noon on Sunday,
we observe a morning of silence.
Adults are asked to hold silence during this time—children are allowed to speak.
At noon on Sunday, we break the silence together with a
free community breakfast. Everyone is welcome.
